UNCOMPROMISING MOMENTS IN PATAGONIA: SUNRISE ON CERRO FITZ ROY

Capturing the spirit of KJUS Performance Outdoor. Capturing the perfect moment. That was what we aimed for, why we were travelling all the way down to Patagonia, one of the southernmost points on our planet.

BryceExperiencing the sunrise over Cerro Fitz Roy is one of these rare, unique moments, so naturally it had to be on our list. But weather conditions in Patagonia are unpredictable and the weather forecast wasn’t exactly promising, the sky already covered with dark clouds.

We knew sunrise was going to be at 5.28 in the morning and ahead of us a four hours hike. We had to make a decision. Scout for a different location or take the risk and eventually be rewarded with a spectacular sunrise? Freezing temperatures and cold winds will also play their part. So what to do? Temperatures? No problem, we are perfectly equipped. Chance to see one of the most amazing sunrises on earth? Let’s go for it.

1 a.m. – the buzzer is ringing. The first look into the dark night unveils a clear starry sky. What a perfect surprise! Coffee to wake up the inner spirits and we are ready to go. In the distance we can vaguely see the surreal seeming Patagonian ice fields and granite rocks, covered in cold blue light. The trail is steep. Beneath us we can hear the Rio Blanco. Occasionally, big ice rocks are rumbling down at the other side of the valley. We don’t see much, but we can hear, smell and feel everything. An intense feeling.

DunveganWe reach the tree line and start to climb up a steep slope. The horizon is already dipped in bright orange. The day begins with a spectacular play of colors. We’re in a race against time. Then, just ten minutes before sunrise, we arrive at Lago de los Tres at the foot of the massive granite walls of Cerro Fitz Roy.

The sky’s clear, the sun rises. Words cannot describe the beauty of the moment. Even pictures tend to fade out in the presence of this natural spectacle. A true “uncompromising moment”.  “I’ve taken pictures all around the world! On the North Pole, on the Everest, in the Alps or on Spitsbergen! But seeing the sunrise here on Fitz Roy is among the top three experiences in my life”, explains Sindre, the photographer on our trip.

Filled with excitement we’re rushing back to the starting point of our trail and enjoy a sweet piece of chocolate and a tasty cappuccino in the local chocolateria. In our backpack impressions and images we have never dreamed of.

Stay tuned for more interesting "uncompromising moments" to come - Patagonia truly made a lasting impression on us!
